Podcast host suggests Tottenham star got a ‘deserving’ call up

Dominic Solanke is the third-highest scorer in EPL

Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke earned his first England call-up in seven years as he found himself among the English camp under the Three Lions interim manager Lee Carsley.

The ex-Liverpool striker made a £65 million move from Bournemouth to White Hart Lane in the recently concluded summer transfer window as the Lilywhites look to him to fill the void left by Harry Kane at the apex of their attack.

He did endure a difficult start to life in London as pressure mounted; however, once he got going, Solanke started being integral to Ange Postecoglou’s side by not only being a physical presence upfront but also spreading attacking sequences with his hold-up ability.

And while many thought it was too soon for Solanke to be called up to the senior side, John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, claims that the former Cherries ace deserved his call up on the back of “fantastic” performances for Spurs this season. He also acknowledged how Solanke is the most natural alternative to Harry Kane in the current England setup.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:

-> Tottenham interested in signing another Bournemouth star after Dominic Solanke

“I feel Solanke’s England call-up was deserved. It just goes to show, last year despite everything he was doing for Bournemouth he was completely overlooked. Now that he has made a big move, the door has opened.

“However, I’m pleased for him on a personal level. For me, when Kane isn’t playing, Solanke is a more natural alternative in terms of his style of play than someone such as Ollie Watkins.

“Hopefully he gets some more minutes and can grab a goal. He has been fantastic for Tottenham, and I think being part of this England squad is really good for his confidence.”

Solanke did get some minutes under his belt against Greece, and with another Nations League fixture around the corner (against Finland, 13th October), the 27-year-old would be hoping to earn another cap in the England setup.

Many thought that he was called up too soon, with other possible players deserving a place in English camp more. Do you think Solanke deserved his England call-up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
