Former Spurs keeper backs struggling Tottenham star amid criticism

End of the road for Timo Werner at Tottenham - is there any chance he can salvage his career? – Opinion

Tottenham Hotspur had a roller coaster of a season with a slow start shadowing all the goods that Ange Postecoglou had done in the previous campaign; however, a five-game winning streak followed. But as things looked on a high, a horrendous defeat against Brighton had all the cards falling down once again. By no manner it was a horrible scoreline (3-2), though the manner of the defeat was what made it a talk among the supporters.

The club, head coach, and players received ample criticism, and among them who was cornered by fans and pundits alike was Spurs forward Timo Werner.

Werner has been notching some consistent minutes under his belt following Heung Min Son’s injury, and this was the German international’s opportunity to impress; however, the former Chelsea ace has been missing a good set of opportunities coming his way.

Robinson: Werner a good player, Lacks end product

And former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has come to Werner’s defence despite his problems in the final third. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Robinson insists that Werner is always working hard and grinding through games despite his lack of output.

He said:

“I think he’s a good player, he just lacks end product. Against Brighton, in the first half, he was probably one of the best players on the pitch for Spurs. He was a great outlet and he had the beating of his man.

“In the second half, Veltmen took care of that problem, bumping him off the ball, but he was excellent in the first half. A lot of the good came through Timo Werner.

“I do think there is an issue with his lack of productivity, goals and assists. It’s there for all to see. His work rate is what I like, though. You just can’t rely on him for goals and creativity, though that can be worked on.”

Ange Postecoglou, to a certain extent, will definitely agree with Robinson, as his decision to have him in the squad and give him consistent minutes does suggest that the Greek-born head coach knows there are good players in Timo.

However, with Son expected to return from his injury, it is difficult to see Werner getting minutes from the get-go in the Premier League.
