Tottenham Hotspur have done brilliantly in the recently concluded summer transfer window, where they not only brought in some excellent players but also ensured that the surplus at Hotspur Way is cleared off. Daniel Levy has been targeting young players with massive potential off late, and that has blessed the Lilywhites with a duo of highly regarded stars, Archie Gray and Lucas Bregvall.
Spurs correspondent journalist Alasdair Gold has hinted that Tottenham may be looking to sign a veteran midfielder to act as a stop gap till Archie Gray is ready to step up.
The North Londoners have been subject to links with multiple midfielders for a while, including Premier League maestros Conor Gallagher and Jacob Ramsey. In fact, the Lilywhites went on to offer a cash plus swap deal, including Gio Lo Celso for the latter. However, Villa rejected Tottenham’s offer, and Ramsey stayed with Unai Emery’s side while Conor Gallagher eventually moved to Atletico Madrid, leaving Spurs without either of their highly regarded targets.
Spurs target Archie Gray predecessor?
However, Gold suggests that the Lilywhites pursuit for a new midfielder might not be over just yet. When he was quizzed whether the club are pursuing a move for a new defensive midfielder, the journalist suggested that Tottenham have a long-term number 6 candidate in Archie Gray; however, Spurs could still bring a new DM in the next summer window.
Writing in his Q&A for Football.London, he wrote:
-> Tottenham interested in signing another Bournemouth star after Dominic Solanke
“In my view, Archie Gray is the long-term candidate for the role but I wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs bring in another option for the position in the meantime in the summer and one of the current incumbents moves on.”
Bissouma, Bentancur departures paves way for new signing at Tottenham?
Gold’s comments suggest that Spurs may look to sell one of the current crop of midfielders to make space in the dressing room for a new signing. At the moment, Spurs have Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, and Rodrigo Bentancur, alongside Gray and Bergvall.
From the aforementioned midfielders, Bissouma has been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane, while injury and off-field problems for Bentancur may force him off Levy’s books as well.
