Tottenham’s season has been anything but ideal so far. Currently sitting 10th in the table, Spurs delivered Ipswich Town their first Premier League win in over 20 years this past Sunday. The Tractor Boys pulled off a major upset at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, sparking an ongoing inquest within the Spurs camp.
Speaking on The View from The Lane, Journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke discussed some of Tottenham’s challenges, highlighting that the club recognises a major issue with consistency. According to Pitt-Brooke, Spurs are well aware that their players are simply too inconsistent.
He noted that the team’s performance hinges on key players stepping up, specifically naming Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero, and James Maddison as pivotal figures capable of driving change.
Inconsistency is the problem that looms over the Lilywhites
Tottenham currently face a significant consistency issue, with even their star players struggling to maintain form. Once regarded as Spurs’ most reliable performer, Heung-Min Son has been inconsistent this season, and Richarlison has faced similar criticism as he keeps on being unavailable due to injury. Addressing this problem may require a hard look at Tottenham’s recruitment strategy.
For years, Spurs have focused on acquiring promising young talent from smaller clubs. Three of their most notable recent signings came from Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City. When players arrive from clubs without top-tier experience, inconsistency is often inevitable, as they’re not yet proven at the highest level.
Speaking on his podcast the Journo remarked,
“All the guys who you need to be at their best week in, week out, they’re not really, you know, Son is not having a good season, I don’t think. Admittedly, he’s had injuries, obviously, I think he has credit in the bank for being so good for the last nine years, but he’s not having a good season.
“Romero is not having a good season. Maddison is so inconsistent, he’s no longer in the team.”
The journalist stressed that Tottenham’s key players must step up, especially as the team deals with a wave of injuries. Club legend Heung-Min Son is struggling to find his rhythm, and James Maddison—who generated significant buzz last season—is now struggling even to secure a spot in the starting eleven.
Spurs appear to have moved away from recruiting talent from other top clubs, opting instead for players from smaller clubs who are seen as high-potential prospects.

Spurs need a major reset and may have to go back to the drawing board if they are serious about challenging for titles. The expert claims that without the commitment of their main players, a comeback will be tough. Consistency is crucial, especially from key figures like Heung-Min Son, who is expected to lead by example for Tottenham in the same way Mohamed Salah does for Liverpool.
