Tottenham Hotspur have had a mixed season so far, with Ange masterclass happening alongside some Horror shows.
With the January transfer window approaching, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou may look to strengthen his squad. According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham have reignited their interest in a midfielder they pursued during the summer.
Andy Diouf has made a name for himself as one of the best progressive ball carriers around, drawing comparisons to Aston Villa’s John McGinn. Spurs have been closely monitoring his performances.
Tottenham are now in the race for Diouf, competing with West Ham and Crystal Palace, both of whom have also been scouting the 21-year-old. The report suggests that Spurs’ interest in Diouf has left both the Hammers and the Eagles worried about losing out on the talented midfielder.
Andy Diouf has been impressing scouts
Diouf developed his skills at several French clubs during his youth, including Paris Saint-Germain, before progressing through the ranks at Rennes. After a successful loan stint with Basel, he made a permanent move to the Swiss club in May 2023. Just a few months later, he transferred to Lens for €14 million (around £12 million).
Since joining Lens, Diouf has made a strong impact at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, featuring in 43 matches for Les Sang et Or and contributing one goal and two assists. As per FBRef, the reported Tottenham target is in the 98th percentile for progressive carries per match (4.18) and for successful take-ons (2.12 per match).
The stats website identified John McGinn as Diouf’s closest comparison, with Wilson Odobert, Nicolò Barella, and Adrien Rabiot also featuring on the list of similar players.
Additionally, Jacek Kulig from Football Talent Scout has drawn parallels between Diouf and Saúl Ñíguez, giving Diouf an 8/10 rating for his potential.
