Jamie O’Hara bemoans ‘frustrating’ Tottenham star’s lack of consistency

Postecoglou confirms that 'singled out' Tottenham star is ahead of the curve following Ferencváros win.

Brennan Johnson is Tottenham Hotspur’s top scorer this season with seven goals

Tottenham Hotspur boasts of some talented young players with massive potential, and one of them is Brennan Johnson.

The Wales international had a rollercoaster opening few months of the new campaign; he started poorly and was subject to intense criticism from fans and pundits alike. This led to the winger deactivating his Instagram account in September.

However, Brennan Johnson has come into his own of late, proving a major goal threat for the Lilywhites. Such was his purple patch that he joined an exclusive group of only seven players to score in six consecutive games for the club since the inception of league football in 1908. So far this season, the 23-year-old has scored four goals in 10 Premier League starts and has become a vital player for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Nonetheless, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara is not satisfied with Johnson’s productivity. The talkSPORT pundit wants more and has urged the Welshman to provide more of a threat with the ball at his feet.

“He is frustrating, Brennan Johnson, isn’t he? I watch him for Spurs all the time,” Jamie O’Hara told Dean Saunders on talkSPORT after Turkey’s 0-0 draw with Wales in a UEFA Nations League fixture last weekend.

“Quick, he has got a flurry of goals for Spurs, but it’s still moments in them games where I am like, ah, give me more, you know, like make something happen.

“When he gets the ball, he stands behind players, but fair play to him, his goals record for Spurs has been unbelievable this season, but I still feel like there’s more you need to get out of him.”

This isn’t the first time O’Hara has criticised Johnson for not providing more threat in the final third for Spurs. He notably slated the winger after the North London defeat to Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September, calling him ‘frustrating’ to watch and saying he never showed for the ball and that it was ‘unbelievable’ how much he hid.

"We're enjoying it a lot"- Tottenham's Brennan Johnson talks about life under Ange Postecoglou
Brennan Johnson has become an important player for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs this season.

Truth be told, there is still a lot to be desired from Johnson. Yes, he is 23, reasonably young and has time to grow and unlock his potential, but his decision-making on the ball in the final third is something that needs a lot of improvement. He has added goals to his game, with seven strikes already beating his tally from last season, which should have pleased Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff.

Overall, nonetheless, the Wales star has to work on certain aspects of the game if he is to enjoy an illustrious career at Tottenham. It is still widely felt among certain sections of our fanbase, and of course, O’Hara, that the £70,000 per week attacker is yet to justify the £47.5m fee the Lilywhites splashed to sign him from Nottingham Forest last year.

No one can argue with Johnson’s attacking output as he is the club’s top scorer with seven goals across all competitions. If he can now bring more consistency to his game, the Nottingham-born star can become a potent weapon for Big Ange’s side.
