Guglielmo Vicario suffered an ankle fracture in Tottenham’s 4-0 win at Manchester City
Ange Postecoglou has struggled to get the desired performances and results in his second season at Tottenham Hotspur.
After a fine debut season in North London, where Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League and subsequently qualified for the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou was expected to kick on and help his squad challenge for a spot in the top four. He was sufficiently backed in the summer transfer window by Daniel Levy, with the club breaking their transfer record by acquiring the services of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth.
However, the Greek-Aussie tactician has not managed to achieve stability this term. One of the mitigating factors behind this is the number of injury problems he has had to deal with in the last couple of months.
-> Tottenham to prioritise goalkeeper signing in January
Injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies have resulted in Postecoglou recently deploying teenager Archie Gray at the heart of Spurs’ backline in the games against Rangers and Southampton. In addition to the club’s lack of defensive depth getting exposed, he also lost his No.1 Guglielmo Vicario to a long-term ankle injury last month.
Guglielmo Vicario suffered a fractured ankle in the 4-0 win at Manchester City in the Premier League which forced him to undergo surgery. The Italian has been ruled out for the foreseeable future, with Fraser Forster deputizing for him in recent matches.
Now, Dr Rajpal Brar has dropped the latest injury update on Vicario. The injury expert claims that a return in February 2025 appears to be the best-case scenario for the 28-year-old after having undergone surgery last month.
“His current day to day will be recovery from the surgery with range of motion and strengthening as possible within the protocols,” Dr Rajpal Brar exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Best-case scenario here sounds like him returning to training around late February or so but as said by Ange, really hard to know until he’s back on the grass and they see how he’s responding.”
-> Tottenham eyeing long-term Fraser Forster replacement
Despite Vicario’s obvious weaknesses from set-plays, he has been a vital part of Spurs’ defensive unit. His leadership, shot-stopping and ability to play out from the back has been missed in recent games. While Forster has done a commendable since donning the gloves, he isn’t great with the ball at his feet which Big Ange expects his goalkeeper to be.

With Vicario expected to be out until late February, Big Ange has two options; either he continues trusting Forster in goal or pushes the club chiefs to sign a new goalkeeper in January. Anthony Patterson of Sunderland and Burnley star James Trafford are on the club’s radar, while Botafogo’s John Victor has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent days.
