Tottenham monitoring situation of PSG defender Axel Tape

Tottenham among several clubs keen to sign highly-rated Paris Saint-Germain defender Axel Tape

In recent years, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has placed a huge emphasis on signing players aged between 18 and 21, with potential to shine in the first team over the next few years. This saw them sign youngsters such as Destiny Udogie, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Pape Matar Sarr over the last few transfer windows.

During the January transfer window, the Lilywhites jumped at the opportunity to sign Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season with a buy option. The club bosses will decide at the end of the season whether to sign Tel permanently from Bayern Munich or not.

Now, Spurs are showing interest in signing further young talents. While signing first-team ready stars will be the priority this summer, Levy is sure to bolster the pool of young talent as well. According to a report from Sports Zone, Tottenham are among several clubs monitoring the situation of young defender Axel Tape at Paris Saint-Germain.

Axel Tape has made the step up from the academy to the senior Paris Saint-Germain team this season, starting two Ligue 1 games and featuring in the Coupe de France. The Ligue 1 champions are hoping to retain the player, and to do so, there have been talks over him signing his first professional contract. However, those talks have not proven fruitful thus far.

The teenager is yet to commit his future at PSG and wants to move onto pastures new at the end of the season. Given he will soon be a free agent, this has put several clubs across Europe on red alert. The aforementioned report adds Bayer Leverkusen are in pole position to sign Tape, who is also wanted by Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Spurs have had defensive problems throughout the season. First-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have struggled with injuries and form, while their back-up Radu Dragusin has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL rupture. So, signing a young central defender who can improve the depth of the squad and develop steadily is the need of the hour, and Tape fits the bill perfectly.

Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall called up for the Swedish international side.

The Frenchman, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, could prove a smart investment for the future. The North London outfit’s proven record of integrating young players into the first team, especially this season, could give them an edge in convincing the Bondy-born talent to join their forces ahead of other European powerhouses.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Currently, Leverkusen are leading the race for Tape, but with their head coach Xabi Alonso set to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, the situation could change in next weeks. So, Spurs have all the opportunity to present the youngster and his camp our project under a potential new boss.
