Lille star Angel Gomes snubs Tottenham to join Marseille in the summer

A lot of changes are taking place at Tottenham this summer. The Lilywhites are in all sorts of trouble just two weeks after winning the Europa League. The North London club announced the departure of Ange Postecoglou on Friday after a disappointing Premier League campaign. The Europa League success was meant to be a celebration at N17, but the sacking news has dampened the energy of the fans.

It is fair to say that the club has not gotten off to a good start in the transfer market following the historic achievement. The Lilywhites are already playing catch-up with other clubs in the transfer window. A major squad overhaul is needed before the start of next season, and the departure of Ange Postecoglou will make the decision to cash in on underperforming player easy.

There is a clear need for Spurs to bring in quality players to bolster the squad depth for next season. The North London club will be competing in the Champions League, so a full-strength team will be needed if the Lilywhites want to close the gap on their rivals. Daniel Levy cannot be complacent while entering the transfer market as Tottenham need to address a lot of problems in the summer.

Tottenham suffer blow in their pursuit of Lille star Angel Gomes

There are not a lot of things that Tottenham fans can be happy about following the recent sacking of Ange Postecoglou. The Australian tactician managed to do the unthinkable by ending the club’s long-standing trophy drought. And in return, Daniel Levy decided to sack the ex-Celtic boss two weeks after the final. Now the North London club have suffered yet another blow for next season.

It was reported earlier that Spurs were interested in signing Lille midfielder Angel Gomes in the summer on a free transfer. But the Lilywhites are now all set to miss out on the England international. As per Fabrizio Romano (via X), Marseille have reached an agreement in principle to sign Gomes for next three seasons. The Lille midfielder wants to test himself in France and has given Marseille a priority over other clubs.

However, Lilywhites Rose owner John Wenham is not too fussed about Spurs missing out on Angel Gomes. Speaking to the Tottenham News, Wenham said,

“Personally, I wasn’t that excited about Gomes joining Tottenham. Yes, it was a free transfer, and it made sense, and he would have done okay, but it didn’t fill me with too much excitement. However, perhaps this suggests that we’ve decided now that we’re in the Champions League, we’re going to aim higher and make a high-quality signing.”

Daniel Levy will need to look for alternatives now as the Lilywhites aim to bring in a backup for James Maddison. It was reported earlier that Spurs are also interested in RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons. A deal for the Dutchman looks possible as Leipzig will not be playing European football next season. Fans will hope that Levy manages to fend off competition from other top clubs for Simons’ signature.
