“It was a pipe dream”- John Wenham believes Tottenham would not accept low offer for star defender amid Atletico Madrid links

Tottenham star Cristian Romero is looking to get started at N17 under Thomas Frank after weeks of transfer speculation

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero might just stay put at N17 after weeks of speculation surrounding the Argentinian’s future. The 27-year-old has quickly become a mainstay at the club, and the impact that the centre-back has in the dressing room is clear to see. The ex-Atalanta star is head and shoulders clear than every other defender in the squad as well.

There were some question marks surrounding Romero’s future at the club, after the Spurs defender admitted that he wanted to try his luck in Spain. The statement sparked an instant reaction from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, and the Spanish club saw the opportunity to test the waters for the 27-year-old’s signature for next season.

It is fair to say that losing out on the centre-back would have been a huge blow for Thomas Frank. The Argentina international has shown time and again why he is considered to be ‘the best defender in the world’, and losing him would have carved out a huge hole in the heart of the defence before next season kicked off.

Tottenham star Cristian Romero is set to stay at N17

It was reported earlier that Tottenham were ready to pull out all stops in their efforts to convince Cristian Romero to stay at N17. Club chairman Daniel Levy was ready to make the centre-back the highest-paid player in the squad, and Thomas Frank also promised to make an integral part of the setup for next season and beyond. And this might have just tempted Romero to stay put and snub Atletico Madrid.

Now, John Wenham believes that Spurs would have never sold Romero unless the offer was worth £80m. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,

“The money talked about the whole time has been nonsense, quite frankly. Tottenham spent £40million to get Romero. There’s no basis that we can sell him for only a £10m or £15m profit on what we paid.”

The Lilywhite Rose owner added,

“You don’t want to be selling your best players when you’re returning to UEFA Champions League football, but you know, as a minimum, it would have to be £80m, and we haven’t seen anywhere near that level from Atletico Madrid. So for me, it was just a pipe dream all along.”

John Wenham believes that the money Atletico Madrid were offering Cristian Romero was nowhere near the asking price. The Lilywhite Rose owner added Spurs paid £40m for the defender, and the club was looking to secure a good profit if they even considered selling the centre-back. Wenham insisted that the club did not want to lose their best player after returning to the Champions League, and would have only considered an offer worth £80m for his services.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Now that the Argentina international is seemingly staying at N17 for the time being, Spurs must do everything they can to build on the Europa League success next season. Romero will instantly elevate the quality of the defence, and his ability to play out from the back will prove to be beneficial next season. The 27-year-old wears his heart on his sleeve, and the defender’s winning mentality will surely rub on his teammates again.
