Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank’s plans to use Morgan Gibbs-White in his system has been revealed
Tottenham Hotspur are trying to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest, but the deal has become complicated.
After completing a deal for Mohammed Kudus last Wednesday, the North Londoners thought they had quickly wrapped up a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White when they triggered his £60m release clause at Nottingham Forest. However, Nottingham Forest are now taking legal action as a result. They are widely reported to have submitted a legal complaint to the Premier League, with the club’s fiery owner, Evangelos Marinakis, deeply unimpressed by Spurs approaching the English midfielder without prior consent.
This has put the deal in potential doubt, although transfer news guru expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tottenham remain confident of signing Gibbs-White. The Italian journalist confirms that it is a “tense situation”, but the Lilywhites are going to be able to proceed with a deal quickly.

The creative midfielder from Stafford was crucial for Nuno Espirito Santo’s overachieving Forest side last season. He scored seven goals and assisted a further eight, as the Tricky Trees finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League in the process.
Thomas Frank plans to use Morgan Gibbs-White in the No.10 role
Now, according to a report from The Sun, new Spurs boss Thomas Frank has already decided where he wants to play Gibbs-White next season. He plans to play the four-cap England international as a ‘dynamic’ number 10, a role he often played for Forest in Nuno’s system last season.
Gibbs-White, of course, can operate in a deeper role as a box-to-box No.8, but it seems Frank wants to use him in his preferred No.10 role if the deal gets over the line. From his preferred No.10 role, the 25-year-old became a regular fixture in Nuno’s teamsheet and caused problems for the opposition’s defence.

James Maddison will have to fight for his spot
Should Gibbs-White become a Tottenham player and Frank uses him as a No.10 in his system, it will have a direct impact on James Maddison next season. This is because the Spurs star also favours a free role just behind the striker, allowing him to unlock rigid defences with his incisive passing and vision.

Maddison was one of the stars of Tottenham’s Europa League winning campaign, but he was once again inconsistent and sustained a knee injury in May that forced him to miss the final in Bilbao. If Gibbs-White joins, Tottenham’s No.10 will have to add much-needed consistency to his game to be a regular in Frank’s side. But then, given Nottingham’s reaction to Tottenham’s interest, this could very well prove to be a long saga this summer.
