Newcastle enter the fray for €40 million East European marksman; will Tottenham rekindle interest?

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur Premier League rivals Newcastle United are reportedly stepping up their interest in bringing Ukrainian striker Dovbyk to the English shores, with Leeds United as well as West Ham also interested in his signature, per Corriere dello Sport.

Given that AS Roma are now open to selling him in the ongoing summer transfer window after securing themselves a deal to bring Brighton star Evan Ferguson through the doors, suddenly Dovbyk looks like a surplus who could be sold. They are said to be looking out for a €40 million bid for the 28-year-old striker this summer.

Dovbyk was aggressively linked with Tottenham

Newcastle eye Artem Dovbyk.

The North Londoners supporters would remember Dovbyk after he was extensively linked with a move to N17 after his breakout season at Girona, where the Ukrainian completed the campaign as La Liga’s top scorer. He was an integral part of helping them book a spot in the Premier League.

And let us be honest, his numbers in front of goal are really strong given that he also followed up his time in Spain with 17 goals and 4 assists in all competitions for AS Roma, but the Lilywhites have since shifted focus and got themselves a prized asset in Dominic Solanke up front.

With Frank in charge, Dovbyk doesn’t make sense

Dovbyk doesn’t fit the system that Frank has deployed at Tottenham.

With Thomas Frank taking over the reins at Hotspur Way in the ongoing summer transfer window, the North Londoners’ recruitment model has moved away from having to move for fallback options towards signing players that fit the system that the Dane is trying to implement at N17. And given that the North Londoners are expected to play interchangeable forward players (like how he used to play at Brentford), it means that someone like Dovbyk will no longer fit the needs of what Tottenham wants upfront.

Moreover, we are also seeing the Lilywhites push for players who have proved their credentials in the Premier League, with Kudus already coming through the doors, Gibbs-White being eyed before his new contract at City Ground, and then midfield targets James McAtee and Harvey Elliott looking far more aligned with the current direction of where the club is heading towards.

But at the moment, Dovbyk looks like a man in demand given how multiple clubs are courting his signature. For Newcastle, their interest in his signatures comes from the fact that Alexander Isak’s long-term future at St. James Park remains under shackles, with Liverpool looking to secure his signatures.
