Tottenham Hotspur suffered a cruel blow in their preparations for the 2025/26 season, when James Maddison went down with an injury against Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly that ended in a 1-1 draw.
It looked serious for the Englishman from the moment he collapsed to the pitch. With Dejan Kulusevski also out injured for the foreseeable future, it puts Tottenham’s transfer plans in a pickle.
All of a sudden, it looks like the North London club will have to sign a new attacking midfielder. One player that they were linked with, in the aftermath, was Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott.
RB Leipzig open talks with Liverpool for Harvey Elliott

Now, as per reliable journalist David Ornstein, Bundesliga club RB Leipzig have opened talks with Liverpool over a potential Harvey Elliott transfer this summer. The German club view him as a replacement for Xavi Simons.
Simons is pushing for a move away from the Bundesliga with Chelsea emerging as a potential option. Should he leave, it would leave a gaping hole for Leipzig to fill, which they want to do with Elliott.
Spurs now find themselves in a situation where they have to make a decision. Should they consider the option of signing the 22-year-old seriously, they would have to now accelerate talks with the Merseyside club.
Can Tottenham push ahead and convince him?
The other challenge would obviously be convincing Elliott that the N17 would be a better destination for him than Germany. The player might be of the opinion that he would get more regular game time should he move abroad.
There is absolutely no doubt about the talent that Harvey Elliott possesses. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp even labelled him a “fearless” boy. However, the sheer competition for places at Anfield has not allowed him to thrive.
Ideally, Elliott would be an excellent addition to Spurs. He is versatile and can play in multiple positions. He is also English and should help towards registration rules. Let’s wait and see if the North London club push to sign the youngster in the coming days.
