Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to find replacements for Son Heung-min and James Maddison
Last season was a dream come true for Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou led the team to victory against Manchester United in the Europa League final to book a berth in the 2025/26 Champions League. Thomas Frank took over as manager this summer, and a change in the team’s mood was evident from the start. Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel have already arrived, while Joao Palhinha has added strength to the midfield. However, Son Heung-min’s move to LAFC was an emotional blow. On top of that, James Maddison’s ACL injury upset the team’s plans.
Spurs have seen ups and downs over the past few years. There have been some good seasons, some disappointing results, but the Europa League win have restored confidence. Meanwhile, Son’s departure may not have been in the plans, but his departure has come at the right time for the club, as we received a decent amount of money and he didn’t go to a Premier League rival. Still, he was the last player who was in our 2019 Champions League final starting XI against Liverpool. Only Ben Davies is left from that squad. Also, Maddison’s injury has completely changed this summer’s transfer priorities.
Two key areas need urgent action
Football Finance Expert Dan Plumley via Football Insider said the club would be happy with Son’s transfer fee, but filling his place is not easy. He admitted the situation has become more difficult since Maddison’s injury. Kudus has come in, who plays more like an out-and-out winger, but he can’t fully replace Son’s experience and goal contribution. Now, Spurs need not just a new forward, but also a creative midfielder who can fill the void left by Maddison. Plumley said that it is important to fill both of these vacancies immediately. If this does not happen, the team may lose balance in the Champions League season. At this time, finding the right profile in the market is the biggest challenge.

“I think they’ll be happy with the fee. He’s fantastic, been a fantastic servant for the club, and it’s a decent fee, plus he’s not moving to a Premier League rival. He’s off to America, they’ll be happy with the fee they’ve received. They need a replacement, and I think I would throw in with that the unfortunate injury to James Madison as well.
“That’s a big blow, because they wouldn’t have been planning for that.
“They have signed Kudus, but he’s a bit more of an out-and-out winger, but I think they’ve probably now got to be looking at right, we’ve lost Son, that’s a big gap to fill.
“But also, we’re now without James Madison for the season, and that’s another gap to fill.
“I think they’ve got to go and spend in the market off the back of those two things.”
A decision has to be taken immediately
Filling Son’s place is important from both an emotional and strategic point of view. He was not just a player, but the face of our attack. Maddison’s injury has caused a serious blow to creativity. If these two places are not filled soon, the beginning of the season can be in trouble.
Savinho and Harvey Elliott‘s names are coming up in the reports. Savinho’s pace and dribbling skills can pose a threat on the wing like Son, while Harvey Elliott can give a creative output like Maddison in midfield. According to us, Savinho will take some time, but Elliott can make an immediate impact. If the club execute these signings wisely, then Spurs can create headlines in Europe.
