Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with Piero Hincapie but a deal appears unlikely this summer
There are only a few days left till the end of this summer transfer window by Tottenham Hotspur are still in the market to further strengthen their team for the 2025-26 season.
Spurs are mainly looking to strengthen their attack, which is clear from the way they have been linked with players like Eberechi Eze and Savinho in recent days.
Meanwhile, the North London side is also linked with players for other parts of the team. One such player is the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie, who is now being seen as a key target for Spurs in this late stage of the transfer window. In fact, the Lilywhites were reportedly ready to spend up to £51.7 million to trigger his release clause.
However, the latest updates on this story claim that Leverkusen are not too keen to part with such an important defender and they see him as a crucial part of their project going forward. While Tottenham can still convince the defender to join them by paying his release clause, this might not be the best way forward for the North London side.

Bryan King believes the Ecuadorian is not a priority for Spurs
This was certainly the sentiment of the former Spurs scout Bryan King as he talked to Tottenham News. Talking about this operation, King said:
“The only reason Spurs would go for someone like that is because of the injury problems that they’ve had with (Micky) Van de Ven and (Cristian) Romero”.
“Unless Tottenham feel that there’s a need for Hincapie, I can’t see really that it would be a major priority for them.
“If they want quality cover, how are they going to convince a player who costs £51m that he’ll get a regular first team place, when you’ve got two centre backs who are as good as he is?”
There is no doubt that Spurs already have a very good centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Mikey van de Ven. The two defenders showcased their talents and chemistry in the opening match of the Premier League season against Burnley, in which they helped their team keep a clean sheet.
Furthermore, after having been linked with a move away from the North London team for a good part of this summer, Romero also renewed his contract till 2029 on Monday, thus ensuring his long-term continuity at the club.
In such a context, King’s words certainly make sense, as Tottenham do not need to shell out such a large amount of money on a position that they already have well covered, and should use this money to strengthen other parts of the team, especially the offense, which will be missing important players like Son Heung-Min and James Maddison.
