Tottenham Hotspur have no plans to sell Micky van de Ven next year amid Real Madrid’s growing interest

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has emerged as a target for Real Madrid of late.

The Netherlands international has endured two injury-ravaged seasons in north London following his move from VfL Wolfsburg in 2022. As a result, he has missed plenty of games and that has hampered his consistency levels. Yet, that has not stopped Real Madrid from making the Spurs defender among their defensive targets in 2026.

Micky van de Ven did miss over four months of action last season, limiting him to just 22 Premier League appearances. But when he was fully fit, the centre-back made an impact and played a key role in the Europa League final win over Manchester United. It was his heroic clearance that helped the Lilywhites keep a clean sheet against Man United and clinch the Europa League title in Bilbao in May.

Under Xabi Alonso’s leadership, Real Madrid want to continue signing the world’s best players. The Spanish tactician is keen on bolstering his squad’s defensive unit amid uncertainty over the futures of Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba- both out of contract at the end of the season.

This has resulted in Van de Ven catching Los Blancos’ eye, with the Spurs star now on a long list of targets to strengthen the defence. However, Tottenham do not want to sell the Dutchman and have slapped an eye-watering valuation of close to €80 million in an attempt to scare off Real Madrid.

Now, former Spurs scout Mick Brown claims Thomas Frank has no interest whatsoever in letting one of his best players leave while he has a long-term contract at N17 until 2029.

“We know that Real Madrid are in the market for a new centre-back next summer,” Mick Brown said on the Inside Track Podcast,

“Rudiger is out of contract, Alaba is out of contract and they’ve had a few injury issues as well, so they’ve been linked with the likes of Konate on a free transfer.

“It’s not a surprise that Van de Ven is on their radar, he’s been a top player for Tottenham and for the Netherlands, but Tottenham are not looking to sell any time soon.

“A move for Van de Ven would seem unlikely as things stand. He’s under contract until 2029 and he will be a key man for Thomas Frank going forward alongside Cristian Romero at the back.”

Van de Ven crucial to Tottenham plans moving forward

Van de Ven may have been plagued by injury problems during his time in the Premier League, but Tottenham and Thomas Frank have complete faith in the defender. He needs to stay fit in order to fulfil his high potential, and Frank’s immediate focus will be to manage him well.

It is not surprising that the Netherlands star is on Madrid’s radar as they hunt for defensive reinforcements. Wary of Los Blancos’ interest, the north London club are ready to double the 24-year-old’s wages and offer him a new contract. This shows the club’s faith in Van de Ven and how much they want him to be a part of Frank’s plans moving forward.

Needless to say, in addition to doubling his wages, Spurs must show sporting ambition this season and beyond to keep a sublime talent like Van de Ven at N17.
