Alasdair Gold highlights the importance of attacking star as Tottenham depend on him for big moments

Date:

Tottenham star Brennan Johnson has started the new season with a string of impressive performances

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson has already etched his name into the history books at N17 by scoring the decisive goal that secured the Europa League title for the Lilywhites in May. The Welshman was heavily criticised by fans for his lacklustre performances at the start of last season, which even forced him to step away from social media for a few weeks.

However, the 24-year-old silenced his critics with an outstanding second half of the season under Ange Postecoglou. The dynamic winger went on to top the goalscoring charts for the North London club, netting 18 goals in all competitions for Ange’s side.

It is fair to say that Johnson has continued his prolific form under Thomas Frank as well. Despite operating in an unfamiliar role for Spurs this season, the Welshman has already scored three goals in seven appearances for the club. With limited options on the left flank, the Danish tactician has been deploying Johnson there, and the 24-year-old is already making a significant impact from wide areas.

Brennan Johnson has a huge role to play for Tottenham this season

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson has had to make the most of his opportunities under Thomas Frank this season. The Welshman is no longer a guaranteed starter for the Lilywhites, with Frank having a wealth of attacking options at his disposal. However, credit where it is due, the 24-year-old has consistently delivered whenever called upon by the Danish tactician.

Echoing that view, Alasdair Gold believes Spurs will rely heavily on Johnson for ‘decisive moments this season. Writing in his Football.london blog, Gold said

“People will continue to question him but he was last season’s top scorer and so far in this campaign is the joint top scorer again with Richarlison, with three goals from four starts and two of those having to play on the left.”

The journalist added,

“Johnson will be needed in some big moments this season and he’s pretty much always delivered when called upon in front of goal, not least with his involvement that night in Bilbao.”

Brennan Johnson has repeatedly proved his critics wrong by stepping up when it matters most, and Alasdair Gold believes he will continue to do so for the Lilywhites under Thomas Frank. The journalist also notes that the 24-year-old is already the club’s joint top scorer despite featuring predominantly in an unfamiliar role.

With Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert struggling to make an impact on the left flank, Johnson is likely to get more opportunities in that position and could cement his place in the team in the coming weeks. All eyes will be on Thomas Frank as he looks to integrate the 24-year-old more regularly and provide him with consistent game time.
