TalkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara feels Tottenham will fail to beat holders Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round in October
Tottenham Hotspur continued their brilliant start to the new season by beating Doncaster Rovers 3–0 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. By doing so, they booked their place in the fourth round and kept Thomas Frank’s quadruple dreams alive.
Goals from João Palhinha and Brennan Johnson, sandwiched by an own goal from Jay McGrath, decided the Lilywhites’ fate, giving them a comfortable win. Their reward is a fourth-round meeting with holders Newcastle United at St James’ Park in October.
Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2–1 to win the Carabao Cup in March last season, ending their 70-year wait for domestic silverware. It was a historic cup win for the Geordies, and they will do everything within their powers to defend the title, having made it to the fourth round by smashing Bradford City 4–1 in midweek.

TalkSPORT pundit backs Newcastle United to beat Tottenham in the Carabao Cup fourth round
Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara was in disbelief after Tottenham drew Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round. He revealed to talkSPORT that he’s backing the Magpies to beat Spurs in the next round as they are taking the cup competition seriously once again.
“We’re playing Newcastle, come on. Newcastle is a tough game, I don’t think we’ll go there and win, I don’t think we will. Newcastle want to win it, you’re playing the holders,” Jamie O’Hara said on talkSPORT show.
O’Hara is a passionate Tottenham supporter, but he thinks Thomas Frank’s side will not be able to get the job done at St James’ Park and advance to the fifth round of the League Cup.
Frank’s side have shown they can get results against strong sides
Frank has earned plaudits for his tactics and ideas at Tottenham this season. The Dane’s way of setting his teams up according to the opposition has been a breath of fresh air for fans after what they witnessed from former boss Ange Postecoglou last season.
Bar the blemish against Bournemouth, the Lilywhites have done exceptionally well. They were the better team for large parts of the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain. Inexperience and poor game management from the players led to them relinquishing a two-goal lead and losing the subsequent penalty shoot-out to PSG.
Spurs managed to nullify Manchester City and beat them 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in August, while recently showing character to come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. It must be noted that Frank’s side have kept five clean sheets in seven games in all competitions so far this season. The players have taken in Frank’s ideas and defended very well in majority of the games.
Backed by a strong structure in defence, there is no reason why Tottenham cannot travel to Tyneside and knock the holders out of the Carabao Cup next month. The team is playing with a lot of confidence and belief, and if we have our key players available on that day, we can beat Newcastle and continue our journey in the cup competition.
