Tottenham ace rallies for composure after missing out on ‘mandatory win’; lessons learned vs Wolves

Joao Palhinha admits Tottenham Hotspur dropped points vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Tottenham Hotspur had a chance to push them into the second spot in the Premier League table. It would have been the Lilywhites’ sixth win under new head coach Thomas Frank. On paper, facing a bottom-of-the-table side looked like an easy outing for in-form Spurs, but it took a stoppage-time goal from Palhinha for Tottenham to rescue a point against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Joao Palhinha scored a late equaliser for Tottenham.

The Portuguese midfielder signed at Hotspur Way on loan from Bayern Munich in the recently concluded summer transfer window. And he has urged his teammates to show more calmness in decisive moments in his post-match reflections.

He went on to admit that these games are a must-win given where Tottenham are placed. Palhinha also admitted how Tottenham have only themselves to blame after that underwhelming performance.

Speaking via. The Independent, the Bayern Munich loanee said:

“I think it’s mandatory to win these games. I think we give everything and we fight until the last moment – everyone on the pitch.

We try to score, try to get the draw but it is a sad draw in my opinion and we wish much more from this game,”

It was a game of missed chances for Tottenham

Thomas Frank has a lot to reflect on after Wolves draw.

Well, it was a nice first half from Tottenham when you think about it. The Lilywhites looked quite lovely in the first forty-five. Mohammed Kudus came close twice (once from that Sam Johnstone save which went on to the bar and then also an effort which came on the offside). Lucas Bergvall also had a volley attempted from around 12 yards. But all of those were wasted chances, and Tottenham couldn’t capitalise on it.

Then coming into the second half, Victor Pereira tweaked his side a bit. He shifted back to a 3-4-2-1 setup and went on to take the lead in the 54th minute. Santiago Bueno scored from close range from a rebound after Guglielmo Vicario’s save.

TTLB Opinion

And while the goal at the end ended up saving blushes. There is still a lot to work on, as Palhinha said above. Even Thomas Frank went on to admit that his side lost “structure and coolness” after conceding that opener from Wolves. And these are the things that the Dane head coach will need to iron out if Tottenham are to go on and qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season.

But the games continue to come thick and fast. And before there is any chance of reflections, Tottenham are already scheduled to travel to Norway as they face Bodo/Glimt up in the Champions League on Tuesday. The fans would hope that the performance against Bodo is much better then what they saw at N17 on Saturday.
