Tottenham could enter the fray for Liverpool star next January; will the Reds sell?

Tottenham could be in the mix for Joe Gomez if Liverpool are prepared to sell him in the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur were able to significantly bolster their squad during the summer transfer window.

Spurs made some exciting moves in the transfer window, adding quality to their attacking with the signings of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani. They also added steel and physicality to their midfield unit by bringing in Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, and that move is already proving to a shrewd piece of business.

One of the biggest achievements of the summer was to keep hold of Cristian Romero amid heavy links with Atletico Madrid. The club also extended the contract of Romero until 2029 to further ensure the long-term stability of their backline.

Despite adding youngster Kota Takai to the ranks and Kevin Danso joining on a permanent deal from RC Lens in the summer, the north Londoners remain in the hunt for further defensive reinforcements.

Tottenham could move for Joe Gomez if Liverpool decide to sell

According to CaughtOffside’s Daily Briefing, Tottenham could be among several clubs ready to move for Joe Gomez if Liverpool decide to sell in January. Ideally, Liverpool want to keep the defender but would be prepared to sell if the offer is right.

Joe Gomez was on AC Milan’s summer wishlist, but a move never materialised. They brought in Koni De Winter and David Odogu as defensive reinforcements. Yet, AC Milan remain keen on the Liverpool defender, while Juventus and Crystal Palace could also be in the mix.

The Englishman has been at Anfield since the Brendan Rodgers era and is the club’s longest-serving current player. However, competition for places under Arne Slot has been intense, with the versatile defender featuring sporadically since the start of 2024/25 campaign. The Reds remain interested in Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi, after his summer transfer window’s deadline day move collapsed, and should he join Slot’s side in the winter window, Gomez’s chances of playing will be severely restricted ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Should Spurs make a move for Joe Gomez?

Gomez has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool, playing his role during Jurgen Klopp’s successful tenure in Merseyside. He is closing in on 250 appearances for the Reds, and for someone with bags of Premier League experience, European knowhow, versatility and dependability, Gomez could be a strong addition to Tottenham’s backline.

The 28-year-old would significantly enhance Thomas Frank’s squad, adding winning mentality and competition. He can also play at right-back when required, and as Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie are fighting for the left-back spot, Gomez would instantly become a candidate to compete and cover for Pedro Porro on the opposite side.

If the England international wants to continue his career in the Premier League, a move to White Hart Lane would be beneficial. That said, if AC Milan reignite their interest, Tottenham may find it difficult to lure the Liverpool star to north London in 2026.
