Tottenham are looking to add more depth in the back line by signing new players in the upcoming transfer window
Tottenham endured one of their worst-ever Premier League campaigns under Ange Postecoglou last season. The Lilywhites finished just one place above the relegation zone, losing 22 of their 38 matches. Their defensive frailties and disjointed structure ultimately cost Big Ange his job at N17, despite the club’s Europa League success.
However, under Thomas Frank, Spurs look like a completely transformed side this season. His first priority was to fix the defensive issues by making the team more compact and stable. To Frank’s credit, Tottenham’s defensive structure has greatly improved, and the team now looks far more organised against tricky opponents. The Lilywhites have already kept five clean sheets across all competitions this season.

A major positive for Spurs has been the resurgence of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The duo have been outstanding at the heart of the defence and have developed a strong partnership that ranks among the Premier League’s best this season. However, the drop-off in quality is evident whenever one of them is unavailable because of rest or injury.
Tottenham face an uphill battle to land Marc Guehi
Tottenham clearly need to bring in reliable cover for both van de Ven and Romero if they are to take the next step and challenge for the title consistently. At present, Thomas Frank has Kevin Danso, Radu Drăgușin, and Ben Davies as back-up options in defence. While they are dependable, it is fair to say the Danish manager needs greater depth and quality to maintain competition within the squad as the season progresses.
That is exactly why Spurs are now in the race to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. The 25-year-old was on the verge of joining Liverpool in the summer before Palace pulled out of the deal at the last minute. This situation has given Tottenham renewed motivation to pursue his signature, viewing Guehi as a low-risk, high-impact addition to their squad.
However, Spurs are not alone in their pursuit of the England international. According to TBR Football, there is a strong chance that Guehi could opt for a move abroad if the right project presents itself. European heavyweights such as PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus are all reportedly interested in signing him on a free transfer next summer. Domestically, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea are also monitoring his situation closely.
Signing Marc Guehi is a no-brainer for Tottenham
There’s no doubt that signing Marc Guehi would elevate Tottenham from top-four contenders to genuine title challengers under Thomas Frank. The England international has already proven himself as one of Europe’s most composed and consistent centre-backs, and he would slot seamlessly alongside Cristian Romero in Spurs’ backline without the club needing to spend an exorbitant fee.
With multiple clubs circling, Tottenham will need to act quickly if they are to stand a real chance of landing the 25-year-old. Offering him guaranteed game time and positioning him as a central figure in Frank’s project could be key to convincing Guehi to make the move to N17. Given his Premier League experience and minimal adaptation time, he would be an ideal signing for a club looking to take the next big leap.
So, will Spurs pull off a coup and secure Guehi’s signature, or will this be another case of the one that got away? Only time will tell.
