Interesting 2026 summer awaits Tottenham as Barcelona ponder key sale

Tottenham Hotspur on alert as Barcelona consider offloading Marc-Andre ter Stegen

There is quite unease around Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeping plans. Guglielmo Vicario keeps his place as the first-choice keeper, but the club’s curiosity about other options across Europe sparks fresh speculation. We reported earlier that Tottenham Hotspur are linked with a move for Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Whispers inside the club confirm they have already made contact with Barcelona for a potential move.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Inside Track podcast, explained that the German goalkeeper’s situation at the Catalan club has grown tense. Over the summer, tension rose between Ter Stegen and Barcelona after the club placed him on their long-term medical list. The move came down to finances, not personal reasons.

Barcelona needed to clear wages to register new signings like Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford. Yet this decision revealed a deeper truth. Joan Garcia now stands as the long-term number one. Ter Stegen, who once dominated between the posts, now sits on the sidelines.

The 33-year-old still performs okay when fit, but he struggles to influence games in the new setup. However, O’Rourke said a January transfer looks unlikely, but the summer could change everything. Barcelona face strict financial limits and will prefer to sell him rather than loan him out. They want to cut their wage bill and bring in much-needed funds. However, Tottenham or another club must decide if they want to sign a 33-year-old recovering from injury.

“We know Ter Stegen’s a top player, [he’s] played at a high level for club and country. Obviously, there’s been a bit of unrest between him and Barcelona over the summer when they needed to put him on [the] long-term medical list] to free up space for their wages to register their new signings like Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford.”

“It’s obviously seen that Garcia is the long-term number one now at Barcelona, so Ter Stegen’s opportunities are going to be limited, I think, with the Catalan giants.”

“But, I think it’s a deal that] will be very unlikely to happen in the January window. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the summer if Ter Stegen continues to find himself out of favour at Barcelona. I’m sure Barcelona would prefer to sell him rather than potentially loan him, just to help with their financial situation and obviously get his wages off the wage list at the club.”

Would Newcastle or Tottenham dare a move?

Tottenham and Newcastle United keep their attention on Marc Andre-Ter Stegen

The idea of signing Ter Stegen feels bold yet risky. Newcastle United could gain experience and calmness from him. Those traits will fit their growing ambitions under strong financial backing. Their ownership added £111.5 millionrecently, giving them breathing space.

The club now secures its finances and is planning smart squad investments. Still, the Magpies will definitely have a keen look at the risks carefully. His back problems and high wages could turn a smart signing into a costly mistake.

Tottenham face a different case, as Vicario performs reliably well, but fans have often questioned his control during set pieces. Even after he returned from his ankle injury, there were persistent doubts. The club obviously doesn’t want to rush to replace him, but they want competition.

Ter Stegen could offer that balance, short-term stability and long-term guidance, but the deal requires perfect timing, full trust in his fitness, and financial sense. The next few months will eventually decide everything. Do Spurs make their move for the Barcelona veteran, or do they back Vicario to grow further? Fans will argue that point all season. Tell us, Spurs fans: would you welcome Ter Stegen’s arrival at N17 or keep faith in the Italian’s safe hands?
