English star to be handed new deal; Tottenham hopes for 2026 move in danger?

Tottenham target Morgan Rogers is in talks with Aston Villa over a bumper new deal

New Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank was keen to elevate the quality of the squad during the summer transfer window. His focus was on improving the attacking options after losing Son Heung-min to MLS club Los Angeles FC and James Maddison to an ACL injury.

The Lilywhites did manage to save face in the summer transfer window after securing two late high-profile deals. Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani were signed in the final week of the window, as Thomas Frank managed to strengthen his attacking options. However, the North London club had to face a several setbacks in the summer before shifting their focus on these two players.

One of Tottenham’s summer transfer targets was Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers. The 23-year-old was viewed as an ideal replacement for the injured Maddison. He won the PFA Young Player of the Year for his exploits last season, which involved 30 goal contributions in 54 games across all competitions for Aston Villa.

However, the Villans priced out Tottenham before a could happen and Morgan Rogers stayed a part of Unai Emery’s squad.

Aston Villa planning to hand Morgan Rogers a new deal

Rogers has produced some fantastic performances for Villa and is trying to stake a claim for a place in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He scored his debut goal for England in the 3-0 friendly win over Wales last week, vindicating Thomas Tuchel’s strategy. His rapid rise has been nothing short of sensational, no wonder there are several European clubs circling for the playmaker’s signature.

However, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Aston Villa are in talks with Morgan Rogers over a new bumper contract and are ready to put him on par with the club’s highest earners, hoping to fend off interest from several clubs. The Midlands club and the player are well aware of the growing interest, with Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain keeping tabs on the creative forward’s progress.

Rogers’ last contract extension came in November 2024, as the Villans tied him up to June 2030 (Transfermarkt). But, the 23-year-old is still some way off the club’s top earners such as Ollie Watkins, Boubacar Kamara, Emiliano Martinez and Youri Tielemans- who all pocket around £150,000-a-week. The new deal would put the England international on par with the club’s highest earns, provided he accepts it.

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has reported that Villa are delighted with Rogers’ development and want to keep him at the club for a long time.

“Aston Villa are massively happy with Rogers, he has gone from strength to strength under Unai Emery,” Bailey revealed.

“However, he has become a prominent figure for England and Villa know they need to reward him again, and he is in line to become their highest earner.

“Chelsea love Rogers, but I am told PSG are very much keeping tabs on him – they were hugely impressed with what he did against them last season, and have maintained a watching brief ever since.”

Spurs must be proactive in the transfer market

Frank and the recruitment team remain eager to add a dynamic, creative midfielder to ensure Spurs remain competitive in the second half of the season. From Tottenham’s point of view, Rogers would have been a fabulous fit- creative, quick, physical, ball progressor and goalscorer. But the reality is that winter deals for established starters in the Premier League and Europe are always difficult, and this looks no different.

Moreover, Villa are in talks with Rogers over a new deal. Should he agree on bumper new terms, Spurs can kiss goodbye to a potential deal next summer. For the Lilywhites, the challenge now is to pivot quickly and identify an alternative to Rogers who fits Frank’s system and can make an instant impact if signed in January.
