Tottenham fans rage at Christian Eriksen’s performance in loss to Colchester United

Tottenham’s poor start to the season continued after they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United.

Spurs dominated possession and had the better chances, but could not break down a dogged Colchester team. The League Two side grew into the game but didn’t have a shot on target against a changed Spurs team.

Troy Parrott was handed a start while Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga were part of the XI. Tottenham started with several experienced players such as Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez but it just wasn’t enough.

We also had close to 75% possession of the ball but couldn’t make inroads into the Colchester defence.

Penalty misses hurt Spurs

Christian Eriksen hasn’t been at his best since the opening weeks of the season. The Dane was brought on in the second half, with Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min also joining him from the bench.

However, the trio just couldn’t get things done in the final third. The clash ended 0-0 in normal time as both sides prepared for penalties.

Eriksen was the first player to take the penalty and his weak effort was saved easily. Paulo Gazzaniga brought us back into the shootout by saving Jevani Brown’s attempt.

Lucas Moura smacked his kick off the crossbar and Tom Lapslie converted his effort to take the League Two side through. This was Mauricio Pochettino’s first defeat to lower league opposition in cups since arriving in England.

The manager had faced 18 clashes against lower league sides in cup competitions prior to this, and it will be interesting to see how we bounce back from this shock.

Many Spurs fans were upset at the loss on Tuesday night, and directed their anger at Eriksen.
