Mauricio Pochettino has a tough call to make regarding Tottenham’s right-back against Watford
Juan Foyth played the entire 90 minutes for Argentina against Germany in a friendly during the international break.
The result didn’t really matter as the Argentine got some important minutes on the pitch. He hasn’t played any games for us this season but his position against Germany could be important for Spurs.
Foyth started his career as a centre-back at Tottenham, however, he was tried as the right-back in a few games.
The 21-year-old took up this position for the national side last night and looked decent. The right-back slot has been a problem area for Spurs this season, and Mauricio Pochettino would have to make a big call against Watford.
Spurs face the Hornets after the international break and need to pick up a win. Our form hasn’t been great in this campaign, but we should be strong enough to beat Watford.
Selection dilemma for Pochettino
Serge Aurier is the senior right-back at the club but his performances have been below par this season. The Ivorian was linked with an exit during the summer (h/t Sky Sports), and he even got sent off against Southampton for two needless challenges.
Kyle Walker-Peters started the campaign well, but has had his injury problems. The Englishman hasn’t been able to nail down a place in the team despite Pochettino handing him several chances.
Moussa Sissoko was also tried in that position, but he needs to play in the midfield. We are yet to see the best of the Frenchman in the middle of the park, and it makes no sense in playing him at right-back.
Playing Foyth at right-back reduces our attacking output when compared to the other options. Walker-Peters should be the first-choice right-back, but his injury issues are a major concern.
Selling Kieran Trippier and not replacing him is hurting us at the moment as all our options for the right-back spot have their pros and cons.
Pochettino might decide to play it safe and keep Aurier in the starting XI, however, Foyth could also get a run.
