Tottenham could take decision on No.1 keeper in the summer
Football.london’s Alasdair Gold provided an update on what could happen regarding Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation. Hugo Lloris dislocated his elbow in the 3-0 loss at Brighton, and will not return before 2020.
The captain didn’t suffer a break but will undergo rehab, with Paulo Gazzaniga replacing him in the starting XI.
Gold was asked if we would move for a new keeper, and the Tottenham correspondent claimed we could sign a back-up should Lloris not return to full fitness (h/t Football.london):
“I’d be surprised if Spurs went for a new number one mid-season.
“There’s a possibility that if Lloris doesn’t look like returning from injury early in 2020 then they might try to bring in another experienced goalkeeper in January to bolster their options as a second/third choice for the remainder of the season if the feeling is that Alfie Whiteman or Brandon Austin are just too inexperienced.”
However, Gold couldn’t rule out a move for a keeper in the summer should the Frenchman not be back to his best:
“Whether Spurs go for a new number one next summer depends on how Lloris comes back and whether he’s the same player (some fans might not want that same player).”
Gold finished by suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino will offer Lloris the time to get back to his best. However, that could take a while given the extent of the injury. The Frenchman is one of the best keepers in the world but has the tendency to make errors.
Tottenham need to plan for the future
Even if we don’t replace Lloris in the summer, Spurs need to keep options at hand for the future.
The Tottenham captain is already 32 and Gazzaniga is 27. The Argentine should get more minutes to impress after Lloris’
