Tottenham also have the opportunity to make the deal permanent for £56m upon the expiry of the loan in 2021. West Ham United looked to have signed the player, only for Benfica to accept Tottenham’s offer which involved a higher loan fee.
Fernandes will be Jose Mourinho’s first signing as Spurs manager. It should come as a welcome relief to Spurs after losing midfielder Moussa Sissoko to injury until April.
With Christian Eriksen looking likely to leave and Sissoko injured, signing Fernandes is more of a necessity than a luxury. It is believed that Spurs entered the race for the player after they were contacted by the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes. (h/t Guardian)
Fernandes has family in London and is open to moving to the city. The 20-year-old has made 54 appearances for Benfica since making his debut in 2018. He has scored 2 goals and 2 assists during that time. (h/t Whoscored) He has made just 9 appearances this season after falling out of favor with the Benfica manager.
