According to The Sun, Spurs are set to enter the race to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this summer.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho travelled to Germany over the weekend to watch Tottenham’s Champions League opponents RB Leipzig in their 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich.
The report claims that while preparing for next week’s first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was the primary reason for the 57-year-old’s attendance, he may have also been watching French defender Dayot Upamecano with particular interest.
The 21-year-old has just 18 months left on his contract, and Arsenal have been linked with a move for the defender, who now has a £50million release clause in his current contract.
Who is Dayot Upamecano?
Dayot Upamecano is a 20-year-old right-sided centre-back who was born in France but holds dual citizenship with Guinea-Bissau.
He is versatile in the fact that he can also play in centre-midfield. He’s quick, strong and can start attacks just as smoothly as he nips them in the bud.
The defender has played 89 times for RB Leipzig having joined them from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2017.
Jan Vertonghen yet to sign new Tottenham deal
Whilst we wait and see if Spurs’ reported interest in Dayot Upamecano does materialise, one of Jose Mourinho’s current defenders still has his future to sort out.
Jan Vertonghen is out of contract in the summer and as of yet has not signed a new deal to stay at Spurs beyond this campaign. The centre-back has been linked with a move away from North London with former club Ajax reportedly interested in a move to re-sign the 32-year-old should he or the club decide that his future lies away from Tottenham.
