Jose Mourinho sends transfer message to Daniel Levy
According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has sent a clear and emphatic message to chairman Daniel Levy regarding his wishes for the summer transfer window.
Spurs have been hit hard by injuries this season with a number of key players missing important matches. Mourinho particularly faces a shortage in the attacking department with a number of stalwarts unavailable.
The defeat at Leipzig ended the club’s participation in the Champions League while their top-four hopes hang by a thread going into the crucial clash against Manchester United at the weekend.
Speaking after the loss against Leipzig, Mourinho had initially stated that the injured players will be available next season and a squad overhaul was not necessary.
The Portuguese tactician looks to have changed his tune as he aims to send a message to Levy that reinforcements will be necessary come summer. Rather than say it out openly, the crafty Portuguese is getting his point across in other subtle ways.
Guerrilla Warfare
His chosen weapon of persuasion is team selection. Mourinho hopes to send a message with the way he sets up the team and the players he has chosen to fulfil the roles.
An example of this is when he started Japhet Tanganga against Liverpool.
“This is Tottenham. It’s a great chance for him.”
By making the above statement he looked to have subtly made the point that at Spurs he will have to develop players rather than count on the management to bring in new ones.
His vocal admission of being disappointed at club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele while lavishing praise on youngster Oliver Skipp will have raised eyebrows in some sections. Granted that at 19, Skipp is still young. Ndombele is still 23 and is playing in a new team in a new league. It can be argued that he is also young and Mourinho has been unjust in his open criticism.
His repeated statements regarding Troy Parrott not being ready is also an indication that although Tottenham has a number of promising players, they are nowhere near the required level, yet.

Liverpool have shown the effect of continued improvement. Spurs should be striving to do the same. Mauricio Pocchettino recognized the need for a rebuild after the Champions League final loss, now almost a year later, his successor too looks to be doing the same.
