Tottenham could sign Geoffrey Kondogbia for only €30m

According to Evening Standard, Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia could move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer for a deal worth around €30m.

The 27-year-old midfielder is seen as a crucial addition to the Spurs squad. Manager Jose Mourinho is keen to toughen up his squad in the middle of the park after a disappointing season (h/t Evening Standard).

Kondogbia has a release clause of €80m. Tottenham Hotspur are likely to bid €40m for the player. However, they could land the player for lesser if Valencia fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League (h/t Evening Standard).

Valencia are currently seventh in La Liga and face an uphill battle to qualify for Europe’s premier competition. Los Che are currently four points off fourth and will face competition from Atletico Madrid and Getafe for the same.

Kondogbia has made 89 appearances for Los Che and has scored seven goals and eight assists. He was a part of the Valencia squad that won the 2018-19 Copa Del Rey beating Barcelona in the final.

Kondogbia – a long-term target

Tottenham’s chief scout Steve Hitchen is a long-term admirer of the defensive midfielder and has continued to monitor his development this season at the Mestalla. The player was scouted previously as a replacement for impressive Belgian midfielder, Mousa Dembele (h/t Sky Sports).

Hitchen has monitored the player’s progress since first scouting him in 2017. Kondogbia had just ended his stint with Inter Milan by moving to Valencia on loan. He would go on to do enough to impress the Spaniards to sign him on a permanent deal the following year.

He has five caps for France but was given permission to switch nationalities to the Central African Republic two years ago. The move was permitted since Kondogbia’s five appearances for France were in unofficial matches. This prevented him from being cap-tied and he made the move to the country of his parents’ descent.
