Jan Vertonghen drops major hint on Tottenham future
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, who is out of contract with the club in the summer, has dropped a major hint on his future.
Vertonghen has been with Tottenham for almost eight years now, having signed from Ajax in 2012. The Belgian defender has amassed 311 appearances for our club, scoring 14 goals in the process.
Of late, Vertonghen’s future has been a subject of intense speculation. The Belgian international is in the final few months of his contract with Tottenham. This has led to a flurry of interest from clubs to sign him up on a free transfer (h/t The Sun).
Now, the veteran defender has dropped a huge hint that he could be on the move in the summer. Speaking to Play Sports Kot, Vertonghen has revealed that he wants to stay in Europe, but wants to sign for the right club, a club with ambition.
“I want to sign with the right club. It could be Spurs, or another club. It must be a club with ambition. I want to play in Europe, as the national team is important for me.”
Further elaborating on his thought process, the 118-time capped Belgian international said that he is keen on learning a new language and that Spain and Italy are options for him.
“I want to play in Europe and learn another language. Spain and Italy are options. And the duration of the contract will also play a role.”

Vertonghen’s powers have been on the wane in the 2019/20 season. The veteran defender has been well below his best. Based on his latest comments and given Mourinho’s intention to bring in defensive reinforcements, it seems as if the 32-year-old will leave at the end of the season.
