Twitter reacts to the anniversary of Tottenham Hotspur winning English football’s first double
The 6th of May holds a special place in Tottenham Hotspur hearts. It was on this day 59 years ago that the club made history by clinching the double of the First Division championship and FA Cup.
Bill Nicholson’s team secured what was then seen as almost an impossible task by beating Leicester City 2-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. By doing so, Tottenham became the first club to achieve the feat in the 20th century.
It was a fitting end to a season that boasted a number of memorable events. We started off with a record 11 straight wins, a top-flight record that holds to this day.
A 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Arsenal followed before we clinched the First Division title with a victory over closest challengers Sheffield Wednesday.
More was to follow as goals from Bobby Smith and Terry Dyson ensured we left Wembley as FA Cup champions. Dubbed the immortals, the team’s achievements live on to this day. On the anniversary of their glorious achievement, Spurs fans took to Twitter to express their views on the matter.
We take a look at a few of them below.
