Tottenham Hotspur join chase for Reims defender Axel Disasi

According to RMC Sport vis GFFN (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Reims defender Axel Disasi.

The 22-year-old who can play at both centre-back and right-back has made 32 appearances this season, scoring one goal. With just a year to go on his contract, he is unlikely to extend his stay at the Stade Auguste-Delaune.

Reims are keen to recoup what they can for the player this summer, rather than lose him on a free a year later. Valued at £13.2million, he is seen as a cheaper alternative to Dayot Upamecano by our arch-rivals Arsenal.

Apart from the Gunners, the likes of West Ham, Southampton, and Monaco are also keeping tabs on the former France Under-20 international.

According to the report, Tottenham have already expressed their interest in the player. The Ligue 1 side is ready to sell if a team is willing to meet their valuation of the player.

The player’s refusal to pen an extension has not gone down well at his club. Director Mathieu Lacour was vocal in his distaste to what he perceived was bad advice given to the player by his brother, who also acts as his agent.

Meanwhile, Reims president, Jean-Pierre Caillot, had previously warned Disasi that he could see out his contract on the bench. The defence is an area Tottenham does need to rebuild. However, it is important that we bring in players with the right quality and temperament.

Disasi is a player with good potential. However, the antics of the player and the agent leave much to be desired. Based on the Reims director’s comments, it can also be argued that they have been unprofessional in their dealings with the club.

There is no reason why he will not repeat the same in the future if a batter opportunity comes along after (if) he makes a move to Tottenham. Such an action can unsettle the squad, which is something we do not want to see happening.

Disasi may be a skilled player and his cost may not rank very high either. However, attention also has to be paid to his mentality and not just his ability on the pitch.
