Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho hits back at Paul Merson over Harry Kane comments

Jose Mourinho has hit back at former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson over his recent comments on Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane. (h/t Independent)

Merson, this past weekend, questioned if Kane would be able to score 25 goals a season playing in a Mourinho team, given the Portuguese’s penchant for pragmatic approach on the field. The former Arsenal star even went on to add that the England captain will have a “serious think at the end of the season” about his future. (h/t Independent)

Mourinho, in typical Mourinho fashion, launched a staunch defence, as he went on to list a host of strikers that had played under him and flourished at his previous clubs. (h/t Independent)

“I feel a bit strange [about] some analysis and some comments. Especially because it looks for me that the beginning of some comments and analysis, they started from Paul. I have to say I respect a lot people like him and because I respect a lot, I want to be nice in my answer.”

The Portuguese, then, listed the records of Didier Drogba under him at Chelsea, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema at Real Madrid, Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito at Inter Milan, Zlatan Ibrahimović at Manchester United and Inter. (h/t Independent)

Mourinho ended the near four-minute riposte saying (h/t Independent):

“So dear Paul, I have lots of respect for you. I think Harry Kane has no problem at all to score goals in my teams, especially when he’s fit and fresh and has routines of playing. That’s my message to somebody I have lots of respect for.”

True that, Mourinho’s teams are known to have a more defensive approach. But Merson is way off the mark in claiming that strikers would struggle to score 25 goals per season. As Mourinho said, the records speak for themselves.
