Report: Former Man United academy ace on trial at Tottenham Hotspur

Dion McGhee is on trial at Tottenham Hotspur

According to an exclusive report from Vavel UK, Tottenham Hotspur have handed former Manchester United academy man Dion McGhee a trial and are considering signing the attacking midfielder.

The 19-year-old McGhee had been with Manchester United since the age of six. Having come through the youth ranks, the midfielder made his debut for the club’s U-18 team back in 2017. Over the past couple of years, he went on to feature 33 times for the U-18s, bagging five goals and three assists.

The 2019/20 campaign saw the midfielder get a chance in the club’s reserve team. McGhee went on to make 9 appearances for the Red Devils in the Premier League 2, but failed to score or assist.

The teenage midfielder’s contract with the United ran out at the end of June, with the club deciding not to extend his stay. Since then, he has been linked with a host of clubs, including our London rivals West Ham United, while the likes of Rangers and AZ Alkmaar have also been credited with an interest. However, as per the report from Vavel, Tottenham have taken on McGhee on a trial and are looking at offering him a contract. Given that Jose Mourinho was at the helm at Old Trafford for close to three years prior to joining our club, he ought to have some knowledge of the attacking midfielder.

While strengthening the first-team squad,  Tottenham have also been focusing on getting youth players into the ranks. The club recently signed Alfie Devine from Wigan Athletic and are interested in raiding the Latics for Sean McGurk as well. It remains to be seen if there is any truth to the reports of the club considering signing McGhee.
