Tottenham Hotspur face Aston Villa threat in pursuit of Ollie Watkins
According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Ollie Watkins.
The Brentford ace is coming off a prolific season that saw him bag 26 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions. Alongside fellow attackers Bryan Mbeumo and Said Benrahma, Watkins formed the prolific BMW trio that saw Brentford make it to the final of the Championship Playoffs.
This has attracted the attention of the Villians who are in need of a prolific goalscorer. Jack Grealish was the club’s top scorer last season with 10 goals. (h/t Birmingham Mail)
According to the report, Villa are set to intensify their efforts to land the striker. They are set to offer Watkins a bumper £70k-a-week.
With Brentford signing Ivan Toney from Peterborough, the stage may now be set for Villa to make their move. This will come as a setback for Jose Mourinho who has been pursuing Watkins as a backup to Harry Kane. (h/t Birmingham Mail)
With young prospect Troy Parrott joining Millwall on loan, Mourinho is left with no specialist striker to call on if Kane gets injured. Given the difficulties we faced last season, the club’s interest in Watkins should be considered a priority.
The ugly truth!
Spurs, however, are in no position to make a move for the player as things stand. The club will need to sell before they can buy thereby handing Villa a window to pre-empt us to the Brentford star.
Some of the players who could leave are Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, and Paulo Gazzaniga. Whether we can offload these players in time and secure Watkins remains to be seen. (h/t The Express)
