Tottenham interested in Benfica starlet Tomas Tavares

According to a report from Football.london, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is looking to use his links in Portugal to land SL Benfica defender Tomas Tavares.

The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks at Benfica and made his senior debut in the 2019/20 campaign. He featured 26 times for the first-team in his debut season, but failed to contribute with a goal or an assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Primarily a right-back, Tavares can also play on the opposite side of the backline. And, as per the aforementioned report, Tottenham are looking to sign him up in the summer.

Mourinho has already put his contacts in Portugal to good use, helping Tottenham secure an eighteen-month loan deal for Gedson Fernandes from Benfica. While the young midfielder is to make a major impact, he does look like a player with immense potential.

And the Spurs’ boss may well look to repeat the trick with the signing of Tavares. As things stand, Tottenham have two right-backs in new signing Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier. However, the latter has been heavily linked with an exit this summer.

And should he leave, we will be left without a natural backup for Doherty in the new season. Thus, a move for a young defender with potential, such as Tavares, could be a sensible move on the club’s part.

It has been a promising transfer window for Tottenham so far. The signings of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Doherty add plenty of value to the squad. However, there remain a few more concerns that need to be addressed before the window closes next month.

Tottenham begin the new season with a home against Everton in the Premier League this Sunday.
