Gedson Fernandes could leave Tottenham in January, admits Jose Mourinho

Speaking on Sport TV, as reported by the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that struggling star Gedson Fernandes could cut his loan spell short and return to Benfica in January.

The 21-year-old arrived at Tottenham on an eighteen-month loan deal in the January transfer window earlier this year. However, he has never quite been able to carve out a place in the side under Mourinho.

Gedson made just 12 appearances in the second half of the last season. His fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the current campaign, however, with Mourinho using him just one time across all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Competition for places has been intense at Tottenham in the middle of the park with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arriving in the summer and Tanguy Ndombele rediscovering his form. Add to it, the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks, and it is easy to see why the 21-year-old Fernandes hasn’t been getting minutes on the pitch.

And Mourinho, while claiming that he is happy to have the player in the squad, has admitted that Tottenham wouldn’t stop Benfica if they wanted to cancel the loan deal. (h/t Daily Mail)

“For me, it is never a problem, but a solution. Having him in the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation. If the club wants to end the relationship here, we will be here to collaborate, because we want the good of the player. Benfica has the power to decide and will be accepted by us.”

Fernandes recently admitted to having found it difficult to make the transition from Portuguese football to the Premier League. And, if Mourinho’s comments are anything to go by, there could be a good chance that the 21-year-old could be on his way back in the winter.
