Tottenham make Diego Costa a top priority for January

According to Spanish publication La Razon, as relayed by the Express, Tottenham Hotspur have made the signing of Diego Costa a priority in January after his release from Atletico Madrid upon a request from Jose Mourinho.

The 32-year-old Costa worked with our manager Mourinho at Chelsea. Having arrived from Atletico in 2013, he went on to win the Premier League under Jose, and added another league title under Antonio Conte in 2017.

However, after falling out with the Italian, Costa returned to Atletico Madrid in January 2018, in a deal worth £57m. After moving back to Spain, the veteran striker wasn’t able to make quite the desired impact, with injuries and fitness problems holding him back.

Indeed, Costa managed to score just five goals in 30 games across all competitions last season. The striker played just seven times for Atletico in the ongoing campaign, having been battling a leg injury, and netted just twice.

Earlier on Tuesday, the La Liga leaders confirmed that they had arrived at an agreement with the 32-year-old to terminate his contract with immediate effect, meaning Costa is now a free agent. And now, it is being claimed that Mourinho is desperate for a reunion with his former protege at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A vastly experienced campaigner with proven credentials in the Premier League, Costa can be a handy addition as cover for Harry Kane and Carlos Vinicius. On the flip side though, the 32-year-old has been on the decline and given his recent injury issues, the club could end up with another potential Gareth Bale-like situation.
