Tottenham scouting Nicolas Gonzalez, confirms Fabrizio Romano

Speaking to the Last Word on Spurs Podcast (h/t Football.london), journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are scouting VfB Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez.

The 22-year-old made his breakthrough at Argentinos Junior. He went on to make 44 appearances for the latter club, scoring 11 goals, before joining Stuttgart in the summer of 2018.

After enduring a difficult debut season in Germany, the winger found his footing over the past eighteen months or so. Having helped Stuttgart gain promotion to the Bundesliga, Gonzalez has impressed so far int he 2020/21 term. The five-time capped Argentine international has bagged five goals and two assists in 10 league matches so far.

The Athletic (subscription required) revealed earlier this week that Tottenham are interested in Gonzalez, also claiming that Juventus were also keen on the 22-year-old winger.

Romano has now further corroborated that story, confirming that Tottenham are indeed scouting the Argentine. However, the Italian journalist also added that a host of other clubs are in talks with his agent.

“Yes, it is true. Two years ago, Inter Milan were really close to signing him. He is an amazing talent. Tottenham are scouting him. I am told his agent is speaking with many clubs. But it’s (not) advanced or serious yet.”

Gonzalez has been in very impressive form over the past year or so. At 22, the winger still has plenty of room for improvement, with his best years still well ahead of him. Signing him would certainly bolster our attacking ranks. Especially considering that the likes of  Gareth Bale, Erik Lamela and others haven’t been performing at their best.
