Micah Richards questions Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Matt Doherty
According to Football.london, former Manchester City defender turned pundit Micah Richards has questioned Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Tottenham defender Matt Doherty.
The 29-year-old Irishman arrived at Tottenham in the summer window from Wolves. Hailed as a coup, Doherty has failed to establish himself as a regular in the starting XI.
Doherty endured a disappointing outing against Liverpool last week, which led to him being axed for the game against Brighton. Despite Jose Mourinho setting up with a three-man defensive system with wing-backs, Doherty was overlooked, with Moussa Sissoko starting ahead of him.
This decision hasn’t sat right with Richards, given that Doherty played and excelled as a wing-back during his time at Wolves.
“What I don’t understand is that Spurs played with a three at the back. And they played Sissoko wing-back. I know he has done well in a wide right role, at times. More with a four at the back and four in midfield.
“But you have Matt Doherty sitting on the bench there. What’s going through his mind? I could understand if they were playing a four at the back. At Wolves, he played wing-back and he was very effective from the wing-back position. It wasn’t just Spurs looking at him. Loads of teams were looking at him.”

Since arriving at Tottenham, Doherty has featured 18 times in all competitions. Only half of those appearances have come in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has flattered to deceive in his short time at the club. Hopefully, things get better for the Republic of Ireland international in the coming days.
