Transfer News: Tottenham eye Nicolas Gonzalez to replace exit-bound Gareth Bale
Tottenham Hotspur have identified VfB Stuttgart’s Argentine winger Nicolas Gonzalez as a candidate to replace on-loan star Gareth Bale, as per the latest transfer news from Sky Sports.
Bale arrived at Tottenham last summer on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid. After a slow start to life back in London, the Welshman started to hit his strides in recent weeks making some vital contributions. This sparked hopes of a permanent move or at least another season on loan with Spurs.
However, Bale dashed all such speculations in a recent interview, claiming that the plan was always to spend just one year at Tottenham. With the 31-year-old confirming his departure from Tottenham, the club are now scouring the market for replacements with Stuttgart’s Nicolas Gonzalez popping up on the radars.
The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks at Sportivo Escobar, Club Belen and Argentinos Juniors. He went on to make 44 appearances for the latter club, scoring 11 goals, before joining Stuttgart in the summer of 2018.
Gonzalez endured a difficult debut season in Germany as Stuttgart were relegated from the Bundesliga. However, the winger found his footing in the second division, helping them back to the top-flight. The 22-year-old was particularly impressive in the post-lockdown period, scoring eight goals in nine games.
Since returning to the Bundesliga, Gonzalez has carried on in the same vein of form. He has bagged six goals and two assists in 15 league matches. The 22-year-old has made five appearances for the Argentine national team and has scored two goals, both of them coming in his last two matches for La Albiceleste.

Gonzalez has been monitored by Tottenham for quite some time now. And the club could finally launch a move in the summer. The report adds that Stuttgart value him around £27m which seems fairly reasonable given his age and potential.
Apart from Gonzalez, Tottenham are also looking at Lille winger Jonathan Bamba as an option to bolster the attacking ranks. It remains to be seen who the club decides to bring in, in the summer.
