Transfer News: Tottenham extensively scouting Koen Casteels to replace Hugo Lloris in the summer
In the latest transfer news from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are said to be extensively watching Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels as an option to replace captain Hugo Lloris in the summer.
Lloris will be entering the final year of his current contract with Tottenham at the end of the season. Given his advancing age and the contract situation, Tottenham are planning for a long-term replacement for the Frenchman ahead of the summer transfer window.
Burnley’s Nick Pope had been the top candidate for Tottenham but the club has been put off by his price tag which would in excess of £30m. As a result, the Lilywhites are now scouring the transfer market for cheaper alternatives for the England international, with Wolfsburg’s Casteels emerging as one.
Casteels, 28, has spent the majority of his senior career in Germany after having had his breakthrough in his homeland Belgium. The shot-stopper joined TSG Hoffenheim from KRC Genk in 2011 and spent nearly four years at the club before signing for Wolfsburg in January 2015.
He was immediately loaned out to Werder Bremen for six months. Since returning in the summer of 2015, Casteels has been pretty much the first-choice in goal for Wolfsburg, racking up 171 appearances for the club in which he has managed 60 clean sheets.
Casteels was part of the Belgium national team that finished third in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut for the Red Devils in September last year. An experienced campaigner, the 28-year-old has caught the eye of Tottenham who have scouted him thoroughly this term.

Another player that Tottenham are looking at is LOSC Lille’s Mike Maignan. The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the French club and could be available on the cheap this summer. It remains to be seen who the club brings in this summer but a new goalkeeper could certainly be arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
