Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn subjected to transfer enquiry before Jose Mourinho sacking

According to The Athletic (h/t Express), Tottenham had fielded transfer enquiries for out-of-favour star Steven Bergwijn before Jose Mourinho was sacked.

Bergwijn arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from PSV Eindhoven for £27m in the January transfer window last year. After making a stunning impact initially, the Dutchman has faded quite a bit. So much so that, recent weeks had seen Jose Mourinho hardly call on his services.

Indeed, the 23-year-old has failed to score a single goal across all competitions this term. Since February, Bergwijn has featured just once in the Premier League, in the win over Aston Villa and wasn’t part of the matchday squad in each of our last three games.

Mourinho, soon upon Bergwijn’s arrival, had revealed that the Netherlands international was not his first-choice signing.

“Initially – and I’m always very honest on this – he wasn’t my first option when we decided to make a movement in the winter. But in the end, a great decision. A player with a great future, can play on the right and the left.”

And now, it has been revealed that Bergwijn was a subject of transfer enquiry by a number of clubs over his potential availability in the summer transfer window. There had been enquiries for both loan as well as permanent transfers made for the 23-year-old.

This was prior to Mourinho getting the sack from the club, though, and chairman Daniel Levy turned down all the requests.

Bergwijn, at 23, has plenty of scope for improvement. In addition, he is contracted with the club till 2025. With Mourinho no longer at the club, the Dutchman could get a chance to revive his career at Tottenham and fulfil his potential.
