Transfer News: Tottenham to swoop for Sam Johnstone after West Brom relegation

According to transfer news from Metro, Tottenham are planning to swoop for relegated West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone. The Baggies keeper is among a number of players who are on the radar of Premier League clubs after it was confirmed that West Brom are going to be relegated this season.

Johnstone, a product of the Manchester United youth academy, joined West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2018.

Since then, he has been a permanent fixture in goal for the Baggies, helping them earn promotion to the Premier League. While their return campaign to the top-flight went towards relegation, Johnstone has been one of the few bright spots for West Brom and even earned a call-up to the England national team back in March.

Thus, Johnstone would be an ideal target for the club, given that he is in his peak years and has experience at this level. Now it has been reported that Spurs could swoop for the English keeper after West Brom’s relegation was confirmed.

Tottenham have captain Hugo Lloris as the first-choice with Joe Hart as his deputy. However, the latter, at 34, is in the twilight of his career and has made some mistakes over the past couple of seasons that have hurt the team. Furthermore, with his contract up for expiry in a year, a new long-term replacement for the Frenchman is something that the club needs to look at.

Spurs could do with a keeper that can take up the mantle for the next 5-6 years and Johnstone could just provide them with that option. His contract also ends in 2022, meaning that West Brom won’t be in a position to demand a very high fee.
