Steven Bergwijn headed for Tottenham exit, with Ajax interested
According to Dutch outlet De Telegraf (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn could be on his way out this summer with Dutch giants AFC Ajax interested.
Bergwijn arrived at Tottenham in January last year from Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven and made immediate impact at the club, scoring on his debut against Manchester City. The Dutchman then went on to enjoy a productive spell, although his form dipped post lockdown as he finished with three goals and an assist in his 14 league games in 2019/20.
2020/21 though has been nothing short of forgettable for Bergwijn, who struggled no end to make any valuable contributions in attack early on in the season. And eventually, Jose Mourinho, who had backed the 23-year-old during the slump, dropped him from the side and he had since been pretty much out of favour for the rest of the season.
He did get a few changes in the final couple of matches under interim boss Ryan Mason, which was when he scored his first and only goal of the season. Indeed, Bergwijn finished the campaign with a poor return of just one goal and seven assists from 35 games in all competitions, leaving Harry Kane and Son Heung-min way too much to do in attack.
Bergwijn’s lack of game-time and form contrived to see him missing out from the Netherlands squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 next month. And, the 23-year-old could now look to secure a transfer away in order to get his career back on track, with Ajax ready to offer him a lifeline. (h/t Express)

The report goes on to add that the Dutch champions are willing to offer as much as £12m for Bergwijn. Tottenham, though, will demand a fee around £21.5m. It remains to be seen if the 23-year-old’s time with Tottenham is coming to an end.
