Transfer News: Tottenham identify Ollie Watkins as alternative if Harry Kane leaves
According to The Sun (h/t Birmingham Live), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Ollie Watkins as one of the alternatives should Harry Kane end up leaving the club this summer.
Kane’s future at Tottenham has become a hot topic of discussion in recent weeks with the England captain expressing his desire to move on to a new challenge in his career. Spurs, though, remain hopeful of convincing him to stay at the club beyond the summer.
In fact, as per the aforementioned report, Tottenham are hoping that bringing back Mauricio Pochettino from PSG as the club manager can sway Kane’s decision. The club believe that the Argentine would be able to convince the 27-year-old to stay put for at least another year.
However, in case that does not materialise, Tottenham seem to be preparing contingencies, with Ollie Watkins emerging as one such option to replace Kane should he end up leaving.
Watkins signed for Aston Villa only last summer from EFL Championship club Brentford and has enjoyed a fruitful debut campaign in the Premier League. The 25-year-old ended the 2020/21 season with an impressive tally of 16 goals and 5 assists from 40 games in all competitions.
Having made his debut for the England national team in March, Watkins marked the occasion with a goal and has been named in the 33-man provisional squad for the Euros. While he is still very much in the nascent stages of his career at this level, the Englishman has shown enough promise and can be depended upon to be the leading man of a team.

Watkins still has a long way to go but as far as replacements for Kane are concerned, he can be a handy addition, even though he is unlikely to produce the same numbers as his England captain. Another player that Tottenham are looking at, as per the report, is Southampton’s Danny Ings.
Let’s hope it never comes to that and Kane ends up staying put at Tottenham.
