Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur know sky-high price tag of Sam Johnstone
According to a report by The Sun, West Bromwich Albion have slapped a massive price tag on goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Earlier this month, reports emerged that the goalkeeper is linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer. And the Lilywhites are not the only club in for the 28-year-old whose contract at the Hawthorns expires next year.
West Ham United and Manchester United are the other clubs interested him. However, the £20m price tag placed on him has put off both clubs.
The Englishman came through the academy of Manchester United before he made his name playing for the Baggies. He failed to make a single appearance at Old Trafford but cemented himself as a top Premier League goalkeeper during the 2020/21 season.
Johnstone to stay in the PL
Johnstone was one of the silver linings for the club in a dreadful season which saw them get relegated to the Championship. But he has emerged as a valuable asset that they can part with and the player is himself eager to stay in the top flight.
In that regard, it seems that Spurs could offer a better prospect to him. If Manchester United retain both David de Gea and Dean Henderson, he would have a tough time breaking into the squad.
On the other hand, Paulo Gazzaniga is set to depart Spurs after seeing out his contract and that opens up a space for a goalkeeper on Spurs’ books. Both Joe Hart and Hugo Lloris are 34 years old.

In such a scenario, a transfer to N17 seems like a great option for all parties. But it remains to be seen what transpires here and the price tag being quoted seems a bit large if a team wants to buy a backup goalkeeper.
