Antonio Conte to Tottenham could still happen, reckons Italian football expert

Speaking to ESPN FC (h/t Express), Italian football expert Gabriele Marcotti has claimed that the possibility of Antonio Conte becoming the next Tottenham manager should not be completely ruled out.

Over the past week, it seemed set that Conte, who recently quit his post as the Inter Milan manager, was poised to take over as the next Tottenham boss. However, a breakdown in negotiations due to the Italian’s demands led to Spurs ending their interest in him. (h/t Express)

A proven winner, Conte would have been a huge coup for Tottenham, despite his mercurial nature. However, as things stand, a deal does not look like a possibility, with the club turning their attention towards the likes of Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino, yet again.

Marcotti, however, is of the belief that a deal between Conte and Tottenham isn’t entirely dead in the water and the recent stalling may well be a negotiating ploy from both parties.

“I wouldn’t even necessarily take it as a given that this is done with. My understanding is that talks have stalled and Spurs are looking elsewhere but we’ve seen this negotiating ploy before, hoping one side or the other blinks and we could be headed in that direction.

“But the fact that [Mauricio] Pochettino all of a sudden is top of the list again, I think that also tells you something.”

Despite Marcotti’s opinion that a deal could be possible, it seems highly unlikely that either Conte or Daniel Levy would be willing to move from their current stance. It would be in the club’s best interest to move on and push to bring in a different candidate after the entire episode.
