Transfer News: Tottenham interested in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde
According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur ‘highly appreciate’ Sevilla defender Jules Kounde as they line up reinforcements at the back this summer.
Kounde came through the ranks at French club Bordeaux but it was only after he made the switch to Sevilla in 2019 that he exploded into a rising superstar of the game. The 22-year-old was one of the Spanish outfit’s best players as they went on to win the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League.
Kounde followed it up with yet another solid season in 2020/21, establishing himself as one of the best central defenders on display in La Liga. And, it has now emerged that the 22-year-old, who has been called up to the France squad for the UEFA Euro 2020, is a player that Tottenham admire as the club eyes defensive reinforcements this summer.
Tottenham’s defence wasn’t always convincing during the 2020/21 term with Toby Alderweireld starting to show signs of age catching up while Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier were far from the level of consistency required.
Joe Rodon wasn’t given a whole lot of opportunities, but his performances with the Wales national team during the ongoing Euros offer encouraging signs. Nevertheless, another top-class centre-half like Kounde would go a long way in helping Spurs tighten things up at the back in the future.
With Nuno Espirito Santo likely to be named the new manager, it seems like Kounde will be one of the names that Tottenham could target, as per Romano. The Frenchman has a release clause worth €80 million but is expected to be available for a lesser sum, the journalist adds.
Tottenham are gonna sign one or two centre backs: Jules Koundé is ‘highly appreciated’ – he’s expected to leave for less than €80m clause. Also Andersen in the list. ⚪️ #THFC

Romano also mentions that apart from Kounde, Olympique Lyon’s Joachim Andersen is also being considered following his impressive loan spell at Fulham in 2020/21. It remains to be seen if Spurs do go after either of the two defenders this summer. For now, the focus has to be on naming a new manager.
